What do you think gets better with age?

The first thing that came to my mind was LIFE.

While the world wants most of us to think that our lives start to dwindle the older we get, I have seen so much proof that, even in old age, things can get better. Sure, there are some sad things – the deaths of loved ones or those close to us, potential health issues, etc. – but I truly think that having the mindset that life gets better with age could change the way younger people view themselves and others.

I see so many elderly people come through the library. And while some of them may not say much about themselves, and just check out books and leave, I can tell that there’s this air of life about them that’s different than what even I thought about older people when I was younger. Now, I’m in no rush to become older, but I do see being older as a blessing. I look at my parents, and I am grateful that they are seeing their upper years, and that I get to witness that as well, because they’re still in my life. Even my grandparents, despite some health problems, are still here, and I am grateful for that too.

Especially if you are under the authority of Christ, it is amazing the wisdom He bestows on older people who have continued to follow Him into old age. I used to feel judged when older people would share their wisdom with me, now I long to soak it all in. I understand (most of the time) that I don’t know everything there is to know, but there might be someone else older than me out there who has experienced something similar, and can help guide me in the right direction.

I do want to note that, not ALL old people are wise…humans are humans after all, and even elderly people can make mistakes. But for me personally, I have found myself surrounded by older, wiser people, and it is truly a treasure. I’m pretty sure the Bible has a Scripture about that in Proverbs somewhere, but don’t quote me on that.

I feel like people expect you to answer this prompt with the answer “wine” or something like that. I am no wine expert, but I’m sure any wine connoisseur would answer this question with their thoughts.
