movie review (‼️WITH POSSIBLE SPOILERES‼️): k-pop demon hunters.

I wasn’t sure about actually watching this movie, but now that I have, I’M OBSESSED.

I heard about it from some friends in my Discord server (one in particular has probably seen it over 10 times by now). More of them started watching it, and I thought that one of these days, I’d probably make my way around to it…when the hype had died down.

But you know what actually gave me the motivation to want to watch it? Kevin Woo from UKISS, a KPOP group I used to listen to HEAVY back in the day, does the vocals for Mystery Saja, one of the demon boy band members, I was like MMM YEAH, I NEED TO WATCH THIS.

I roped my sister into watching it, even though she was initially skeptical, but we both ended up thinking this movie was really cute!!!

synopsis.

Basically, a KPOP girl group called Huntrix has the duty of slaying any demons that get through their realm in order to keep the peace, and the “Honmoon” (the protective barrier from the demons and their leader Gwi-Ma) secure. If you don’t want the following spoiler, DO NOT READ THE NEXT LINE:

We find out one of the girl members is half demon. So, this is one of the main conflicts of the movie.

The demons devise a plan to come up with a boy band group called the Saja Boys to lure people in to steal their souls. Huntrix struggles through the movie to catch them, and to create the Golden Honmoon before a certain time.

favorite character(s).

Honestly, I’m Huntrix fannn, all 3 of the girls in the group were amazing in their own way. I could relate to Zoey’s personality more. I admit, I also loved Jinu, even though he was a demon, but am I the only one who wanted him and Rumi to get together at the end?

The blue tiger was also a main character I loved, and wished we had a name for him!

((Update: I found out that the tiger’s name is Derpy and the magpie’s (the bird) name is Sussy!))

as ariel from the little mermaid said…”I want MOOOOORE” (these contain spoilers)

As a writer and sucker for a good story, there were some plot holes I wanted filled. Like, okay ‼️SPOILER‼️ Rumi is half-demon, but we get no background as to how this came to be. Like…so you’re saying demons not only steal people’s souls, but also can MATE with people? Make it make sense, please. I know this movie was probably more for the younger crowd, but I would’ve liked more on that whole situation.

Also, Celine was absolute GARBAGE in the mentoring/raising a child department. Yes, she took Rumi in, but she tried to keep the whole half-demon thing a secret her whole life, causing some major self-image issues that obviously come up in the movie. She also was absent throughout most of the movie, I was like, “Okay so…their mentor doesn’t have anything to say about what’s happening??” She never encouraged Rumi to truly be herself, and that was disappointing. She didn’t even admit that it was the right choice in the end for her to tell the truth, which was also disappointing.

And JINU! Don’t get me started on Jinu…I wanted redemption for that man so bad. He was willing to help the girls in the end, but ended up sacrificing himself to help save the world. But he said that Rumi saved his soul, but HOW WHEN YOU ENDED UP DISAPPEARING, NO WHERE TO BE FOUND AT THE END?!

I get he was like 400 years old, but ugh…I still wanted him to stay in the present, and bond with Rumi!

overall rating (out of 5): ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Yep, I definitely want to watch this movie again, and catch what I might have missed the first time. I loved that they used “Love Me Right” by EXO as the song to introduce us to the Saja Boys. I love that there was so much representation of Korean culture (even Kpop culture), and that the characters truly LOOKED Korean, and the voice actors were Korean/Korean American too. Plus, there were some cute and funny moments throughout the movie, and the music wasn’t bad at all!

If you haven’t watched it, and have been debating on giving it a try, it’s really a cute movie with an amazing message about not letting your inner demons win.

After reading this review, are you more interested in watching K-POP Demon Hunters? If you’ve seen it before, do you think the movie portrayed KPOP culture accurately? Did you, too, want Jinu and Rumi to be shipped together?
