I feel like right now, I’m displaying one level of myself consistently, a level I don’t really show because I’m working on other things like my writing and my poetry.
Currently, you’re probably seeing my BRAND AMBASSADOR side showing.
And it’s because Crown Full of Locs has a lip gloss drop happening soon, so I’m full-on promoting it with the pictures and BTS photos of the shoot we did a couple of weeks ago. I won’t even say that I’m overdoing it because I LOVE working with Crown Full of Locs.
What I don’t want to happen though is for my own projects to get placed on the back burner. I am all for supporting and promoting other people’s businesses, I know that I’ll just have to find a creative way to do it that still allows me to work on my own talents and ideas.
I realize it’s been a few weeks since I’ve written some poetry, and while it’s good to take a break away from things to come back to a fresher perspective, I am eager to get back to it. But how to balance all the things I’m interested in, and all the goals I’m striving to accomplish can be a difficult task.
So, what are some things I do to level out the levels within myself?
This is key with a lot of things, but especially when balancing the different projects or ideas I have in my mind. I ask myself, What’s the most important thing right now? What’s coming up sooner rather than later? I have to remember that as I move forward, there are things that need to be finished before I can accomplish the other things that may be on my list, or on my mind.
2. jot things down
While I’m working on one aspect of myself or my brand, I may come across an idea or theme that would help me in another area that I have interest in. Instead of just brushing it off, I write it down, most likely on my phone. Because I’ll definitely forget it, and when I’m done doing what I’m currently doing, and trying to move on to the next thing, I’ll be sad that I didn’t jot down the idea I had previously when focused on something else.
3. say no
This is the hardest for me because every opportunity that I come across, or that presents itself to me sometimes seems like a “I must say ‘yes'” opportunity. Because I think, When will I ever get this chance again? Will this person not consider me later if I say no now?
But every time I say “yes” to someone else’s opportunity for me, I find that I close the doors on opportunities that I can create for myself. This isn’t to say that collaborating on plans is a bad thing, but I still want to make room for the possible creations that God will inspire within me instead of constantly relying on other’s to somewhat spoon-feed me ideas through their original designs.
Not to mention, saying yes to everything is exhausting, and I’ve worn myself out more than enough with saying yes to everything that comes my way. Which brings me to my next point…
Rest is important for yourself, and for the things you want to accomplish! If you’re not well-rested, it just leads to frustration and a clouded mindset, two things you don’t want to have if you’re working with someone on a project, or if you’re working on your own creative endeavors. So be sure to sleep! Yes, there will be those rare late nights when you’re up late, either performing or working on the finishing touches to a piece, but overall, you should be getting a good amount of rest, be it sleep or just doing something that relaxes you!
5. keep practicing
Even if you don’t have something specific that you’re working on, it’s always good to keep practicing. As I’ve been blogging this month (even though I haven’t blogged every single day as I wanted to), it’s still been good for me to practice consistently coming up with topics, and writing about them. It really does give me that feeling I had back when I lived on Tybee; I’m noticing my thoughts and feelings more, and even paying more attention to what I’m doing throughout the day instead of going through the motions.
So practice! Because it makes perfect! And who knows how big of an impact you’re practicing can make in your craft or skill!
While I wrote all those tips out, I was encouraging myself! As I said, I’m currently in a season where I’m focusing on one thing right now, but I really have a lot of other things going on in the background (stay tuned 👀), but it’s important to remember these 5 things as I move forward, and rotate the different levels within myself!
Answer any of these (or all of these) questions in the comments:
How do you balance all the things in your life? How do you balance all of your interests, projects, ideas, etc.? How often do you say “no” or “yes” to opportunities? Do you create more opportunities for yourself than you are presented? What’s a piece of advice you’d give to someone who’s trying to balance? Which one of these tips do you need to work on the most? Which one of these tips do you have nailed down?
