the scary movie squad. ๐Ÿ‘น๐Ÿ’€

This blog post goes out to my Scary Movie Squad, which consists of my sister Kae’sha and friend Patsy.

Since it’s October, all the streaming sites and TV channels have just about every scary movie / TV show available for everyone to watch. If you’d told me years ago that I’d love to watch scary movies, I would have laughed in your face and called you crazy (not really because that’s mean lol, but I would’ve given you an adamant “heck no” instead!).

But thanks to my Scary Movie Squad, I’m more of a critique of scary movies. I always look forward to new ones coming out because I feel like so many of them repeat the same sort of plot or series of events. Or they have the same type of ending. So it’s refreshing to watch one that catches me off guard!

How did this squad come to be?

It began in the summer of 2014…

All three of us were working on Lookout Mountain, and one night after working, we decided to watch The Woman in Black together. It was scary, but it was such a thrilling experience, we decided to just keep watching scary movies so we could get used to them. And so almost every day after work, we would go to Patsy’s house, make dinner or get snacks together, and queue up a scary movie.

It’s honestly crazy how doing something often can dissipate the fear of it. I never liked scary movies, and never imagined being able to watch several so consistently, or actually enjoy watching them.

What if the fears we have in our lives need the same type of action? What if we were afraid of roller coasters so we decided to just keep riding them until we felt like they were more of a thrill than they were terrifying? What if instead of being afraid to talk to strangers, we stepped out of our comfort zone every once in a while, and tried to get to know someone new?

Now, I’m not saying that if you’re scared that you’ll drown in a pool or in the ocean, that you should just keep jumping in the water, and hope that somehow you’ll find the skill to swim…be wise. Take swimming lessons with someone. Learn swimming with someone you trust.

And I’m not saying this will work every single time…you may have already tried something that scares you over and over again, and you’re still scared of it. That’s okay. But maybe it wouldn’t hurt each of us to do something we’re a little afraid of for once. And if that fear is still there, maybe it just allows us to realize and understand our humanity. Sometimes I feel like we think we’re invincible…like nothing can touch us. Yes, we are higher on the scale than animals, but there are still things that hinder us, that keep us afraid so that we don’t hurt ourselves or others.

My favorite scary movie(s)?

I absolutely LOVE the Insidious series. Especially the first two! Such good writing; the plots for both flow so well together! I haven’t watched them in a long time, but maybe I’ll do it this month, I mean, why not?

Oculus and Hush are two movies I wasn’t sure if I’d like, but they turned out to be very good! Definitely check them out if you haven’t already…I think they’re both on Netflix!

New scary movies I want to watch this month?

I definitely want to watch Antebellum. My friend Caylin swears up and down that it’s so good, and I believe her!

I also want to watch Doctor Sleep. I completely forgot about it until I saw I think an ad for it, and then my boyfriend’s sister tweeted that it was really good.

I’ve seen trailers for The Turning, but I can’t decide if I really want to watch it. I feel like I’m mostly being pulled because Finn Wolfhard of Stranger Things is cast in the movie.

Other than those two… I really need suggestions! So, if you’re a horror movie fanatic like me, drop those movies in the comments! Hopefully I haven’t seen them already ๐Ÿ˜…

Scary movies I wouldn’t touch with a 10-foot pole?

The Witch and Sinister are the top two that come to mind. They were both just…terrifying. Like, make me want to hide under my blanket at night right after watching terrifying.

Malevolent was also pretty scary…I feel like I cried after watching it because of a certain part or two.

I will say, I remember watching The Conjuring in college, and crying because I was so scared because of the Annabelle doll (my sister’s name is Annabelle, so it just messed me up, y’all). I literally had a friend of mine pray over me. My spirit was extremely sensitive to that movie. But I wouldn’t say that I wouldn’t try to watch it again…๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Do you like scary movies? If not, why not? If so, what are some of your favorites? Any suggestions I should take? What’s something you’re afraid of, and how can you work towards being less afraid of it? Or is it healthy for you to be scared of it?
